The Launcher software is a simple and basic application that can launch other programs and applications with ease.
The Launcher has three different views: Recently used applications, All applications, and Recently installed applications. You can switch between these views using the selector in the top left corner. Recently used applications view displays the most used applications first, while the All applications view shows all applications in alphabetical order. The Recently installed applications view shows the latest applications you have installed in the order of their installation.
The Launcher has a variety of hotkeys making it fully functional without a mouse. You can switch between the views, search for applications, clear your search field, change filters, and close the application using hotkeys. The Launcher is configurable with a configuration file, which can be found in '~/.thelauncher/gtk-ui'.
Additionally, you can install custom application shortcuts into your '~/.thelauncher/local' folder. These applications will override system-wide applications with the same name.
The Launcher is compatible with GTK+ version 2.10.x and Pygtk. In this release, the Launcher has many new features such as: usable application categories support, an update to the search interface to make it less intrusive, an improved 'Frequently used' applications sort algorithm, the application list now loads from subfolders, the Launcher is no longer shown in taskbar and pager when launched from GNOME panel, and new configurations such as a fullscreen mode, menu-like window, and normal window mode. Additionally, all configuration file options can now be specified in command-line using '--option[=value]' notation, which further increases the start-up speed.
