Tom the Tomato is a clone game of Rainbow Islands.
The latest release of Tom the Tomato comes with some exciting new features. Firstly, there's a higher resolution of 320x240 pixels instead of the previous 256x192. This allows for sharper and more precise visuals that enhance the overall gameplay experience. Secondly, there are more colors to choose from, with a full 8-bit mode and a 262144 color palette instead of just 256 colors.
For the programmers out there, this new release has something for you too. The new 8-bit square-wave generator brings in more noise, while the true programmers' art graphics are pleasing to the eye. The same goes for the music, which may be a little loud, so make sure to turn off the speakers.
When it comes to gameplay, Tom the Tomato has it all. The bounding box collision system works great with big bounding boxes, and there's 4-way scrolling (and simulated 8-way scrolling!) for a more immersive experience. This game is known for being hard to beat, with ten challenging levels to complete. Each level features unique tiles with a transparent background and four animated enemies.
Tom the Tomato gives you a few cool effects to play around with. There's a particle effect with rain drops, special effect with tainted sprites in water, and a sound effect (though this may interfere with the music. Not anymore in 2.01). You can even record and play back nine demo recordings!
If you want to cheat your way through the levels (don't worry, we won't tell), there's a cheat code that allows you to skip levels by pressing IDLEV times on the ready screen. Plus, there are unlimited restarts instead of resorting to load/save cheating.
Tom the Tomato uses the ALLEGRO library, making it available on numerous platforms. Since version 2.01, the game uses DUMB for music playback. Lastly, the full C++ source code is provided, although it's somewhat obfuscated and protected by GPL. Overall, Tom the Tomato is an enjoyable game with several notable features, making it a game definitely worth checking out.
