Typhoon 2001 is a free game that draws inspiration from Tempest 2000 and Tempest arcade game.
The game boasts stunning graphics and awesome sound, with 100 thrilling levels and seven different enemies. The game also features a slowly rising difficulty level, and you can select the starting level freely. You can control the game using a keyboard, mouse or gamepad, and there is even a built-in level editor. Typhoon 2001 uses OpenGL and Allegro for top-notch performance.
What's more, Typhoon 2001 can run on a none 3D graphics accelerator, making it suitable for laptops. The game settings can also be adjusted easily by entering the default "enter" key, which serves as the superzapper button.
To run Typhoon 2001, you need a Linux 2.6.x with X11 and hardware accelerated OpenGL drivers, 128 to 256 MBytes of RAM (depending on the operating system), and a processor with about 500 Mhz. You will also need an OpenGL-capable 3D-Accelerator card - it doesn't need to be on par with a GeForce 8800, but it should be decent.
In the newest release, Typhoon 2001 has updated to Allegro 4.2.2 and AllegroGL 0.4.2. A Linux version is now available (binary-only). The bonus stage controls and the bonus stage itself have been tweaked, and the webs from Tempest and Tempest Tubes have been added (with Tempest 2000 webs to be added in the future). The pixelshatter has been optimized, hopefully eliminating any slowdowns, and the size reduction of some textures has resulted in a ~25% reduction in the datafile size. Additionally, the superzapper now kills the closest enemies first, and there have been some bugfixes and tweaks. Finally, a credits page has been added to the title screen.
Overall, Typhoon 2001 is a must-play game for arcade enthusiasts, offering a thrilling and challenging gameplay experience with top-notch graphics and sound.
