The VideoLAN Server is a Unix/Linux-based MPEG, DVD, and DVB server that allows users to stream multimedia content. It is capable of handling multiple formats and is designed for easy use.
However, it's important to note that the software is not under very active development at the moment. Thus, we advise considering the Stream Output functionality of VLC instead.
This software requires different bandwidth for different streaming options. For MPEG-4 streams, 0.5 to 4 Mbit/s are needed, while for MPEG-2 streams from a digital terrestial television card, satellite card or an MPEG-2 encoding card, the range is 3 to 4Mbit/s. DVDs need 6 to 9 Mbit/s for streaming.
The program supports multiple inputs such as File, DVD, DVB-S (Hauppauge Nova-S / Nexus), DVB-C (Hauppauge DVB-C), DVB-T (Hauppauge Nova-t), MPEG encoding card, ASI card (SVN Only), V4L device (SVN Only). The output options available to you with VLS include UDP Unicast / Multicast and File.
The program has two modes of control: Command line and Telnet. Besides, it can send DVD subtitles, and it is compatible with IPv6.
So, if you want a stable server that can handle multiple streams, VLS software is worth considering.
