The Virt-Factory software helps manage virtualized infrastructure.
The software provides both a web UI and an XMLRPC API for scripting of admin actions, making it easy to use. It is built on open-source projects, including Cobbler, libvirt, and Puppet. Virt-Factory provisions and manages hosts and guests while creating host and guest images from metadata descriptions.
Future developments plan to make it possible to abstract individual hosts and place guests into an equivalent pool of hosts, simplifying the administrator's view of the data center.
Virt-Factory is currently developed on FC-6, but support for FC-7 and RHEL-5 will be added shortly. As an alpha-level project, the software is still unstable but is continuously improving.
The software provides a central server for managing virtual hosts and guests, with an XMLRPC API used by the Web UI and custom scripts. On Managed systems, a special "node daemon" is installed to communicate with the central server over secure XMLRPC.
The target users for Virt-Factory are developers and users managing a large number of virtual systems who have an interest in virtualization and system recipes and appliance concepts. The software uses virtualization as a core systems-management strategy and treats appliances as metadata profiles instead of binary blobs.
In the latest release, the focus has been on making the code more stable and easier to install and deploy. Virt-Factory is an excellent tool for those managing virtual systems in a formal setting, with its focus being on virtual system management.
