VNUML Live is a Live CD based on Gentoo that includes the Virtual Network User Mode Linux virtualization tool, providing a flexible and efficient way to create, test and deploy network topologies.
However, it is worthy of note that VNUML is a versatile tool that can be used to simulate different Linux-based network scenarios ultimately. One of the primary objectives of VNUML is to help developers effectively test network applications and services over complex testbeds consisting of several nodes, even up to tens of nodes and networks within a single Linux machine.
The tool is divided into two principal components: the VNUML language used for describing simulations in XML, and the interpreter of the language (vnuml command), which builds and manages the simulation, effectively hiding all UML complex details from the user. Additionally, to make it easy for people to test VNUML without having to install it on their computers, the VNUML-Live-DVD was created. It is based on Ubuntu and includes the VNUML tool and most examples available on the web.
It is important to note that the VNUML-Live-DVD uses by default the English keymap. However, users can change to other keymaps by pressing F3 key during boot up. If the hard disk installation plan is in play, users must take note of the known problem related to user management. During the installation process, the user asked to be created may not be created correctly. Users must use the default user (ubuntu/ubuntu) to access the system and re-create the user through the administration menus.
Overall, VNUML Live and the VNUML-Live-DVD is a robust tool that solves the needs of developers when it comes to the testing and simulation of network applications and services. Its versatility and functionality make it a must-have tool for developers, ultimately saving them the investment and management complexity needed to create them using actual hardware.
