VT WSUS is a software that provides a source and instructions for building a desktop client, data roll up mechanism, and delegated access website for status and reporting. Its goal is to make WSUS more manageable, functional, and beneficial for WSUS administrators and their clients.
Currently in production at VT on a voluntary basis amongst faculty and staff, the application comes with a provision-able desktop client, four levels of delegated web access to client patch status, six default robust web-generated reports, and a data rollup mechanism to collectively aggregate client data from associated WSUS servers. All this is done while keeping security, stability, and scalability in mind for the WSUS and user computing environment.
VT WSUS has been in development for over a year, including public testing, feedback collection, and thoughtful documentation. It intends to complement Microsoft’s WSUS patch solution and serves as an excellent alternative, especially for those who require additional management functionalities.
VT WSUS is production/stable, operates on desktop and web environments, and is intended for system administrators, developers, and security auditors. The application is under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and supports MS Windows 2000/XP (Desktop) and MS Windows 2003 (Web). Additionally, it is built upon C# and ASP.NET programming languages and provides excellent security features in the realm of updates and patch management.
