The Wap-IRC gateway provides the ability to chat on IRC using WAP-enabled mobile phones.
As a student studying at the University of Vilnius, Lithuania, I became interested in WAP after purchasing my first WAP-enabled mobile phone. I searched for an IRC-WAP gateway but was unfortunately unsuccessful. I found some gateways, but none that allowed me to connect to a specified IRC server until I stumbled upon the Wap-IRC gateway written by Alan Cox.
During the compilation of the software on my FreeBSD server, I encountered an error due to a bad Makefile. However, after correcting the Makefile, the software ran successfully. I use a Siemens C55 mobile phone and made some modifications to start using the Wap-IRC gateway, which are listed below.
The latest release comes with various new features such as refresh included in the main-cgi, a fixed bug in linked nicks with ACTIONs and '*' in there, added /me command for '*' ACTION in channels, and a reload on a regular basis. Other additions include wml1.2 compatible links/input field for accesskey element and a l inewise printout, italic makeup, nicks are linked setting default values.
Overall, the Wap-IRC gateway is an impressive tool that allows IRC chatting on mobile devices. Its straightforward installation process and user-friendly features make it a software worth trying.
