WMQuake is a software that allows users to play Quake 1 in a dockapp window.
One downside to WMQuake is that there is no mouse or CD audio support. These features were not implemented because the developer found them to be useless and not worth the time to implement. However, usage is relatively simple, and all standard quake1 command line options apply except winsize, which was removed.
The feature set is similar to earlier versions of quake 1 for Linux that were handled by crack.com. This is a complete software-only version, with all traces of assembly code removed. The engine renders into a 320x320 buffer, which is then scaled down to fit inside the dockapp. It isn't the prettiest, but it's not terrible either.
Internally, WMQuake renders into a 320x320 buffer that is then scaled down to fit inside the dockapp. It could have used a smaller buffer for reduced CPU load, but that would have disabled the status bar. It seems that the bare minimum size to render into is > 128 because of calculation errors. With smaller window sizes, the game would segfault often.
All in all, WMQuake is a decent way to play Quake 1 in a dockapp window. Hardcore Quake fans who don't mind sacrificing some graphics quality can enjoy the game in a 64x64 window. WMQuake now works with FreeBSD, too. Installation is simple: check the Makefile, make, copy wmquake to where you have your id1/ directory, lowercase the directory and pakfiles, and run ./wmquake &.
