XBattleAI is a Unix game that requires strategic planning and execution to defeat opponents.
This elegant and abstract game is perfect for multiple players or a single player. It is based on the last stable version of XBattle (5.4.1), making it a real-time strategy game in its purest form. You get to battle on a graph/map where specific nodes continuously produce energy (troops), and you fight by drawing arrows along the edges to indicate troop movements.
Although this may seem like a simple game, there are lots of options and more exciting features than just moving troops on a graph. The major difference between the original XBattle and XBattleAI is the ability to use computer-controlled opponents. All options in the original game can now be used in conjunction with the AI option provided by XBattleAI; nevertheless, the AI does not always take advantage of them.
For instance, the AI uses guns only in preparations of attacks (never for harassment), and it never uses paratroopers even if the game parameters allow them. Nevertheless, XBattleAI is still one of the best real-time strategy games out there.
The latest release of XBattleAI comes with several updates, including better client/server options with parameters checking, more manpage updates, and file cleanup. The server and client now have different filenames, and the different processes have different names. Additionally, temp files are deleted when no longer needed, and the argument count has been fixed for -use_server in options.h and xbattle.man. File.c has also been converted to use buffers and bit-twiddling to put values into a known binary format.
Overall, XBattleAI is an excellent Unix strategy game, enhanced with amazing features that make it stand out from other real-time strategy games. Its easy-to-use interface and abstract gameplay make it perfect for both casual and hardcore strategy game players.
