The XIWA project is a web-based accounting software tool coded with Perl and postgreSQL, and provided under the GPL license.
The version 2.0 release of XIWA has removed all old cgi scripts and introduced a completely new interface for every section of the system. Additionally, this version has added some asynchronous Javascript (ajax). Currently, the software runs within a Portal environment that includes user sessions and other useful features. This Portal is released under the Perl license for widespread usefulness.
Some of the key features of "XIWA" include double entry accounting, multiple users at the same time, multiple sets of books (ledgers), and multiple ledgers open concurrently. Users can also customize and create their reports while sharing accounts/codes between ledgers. Additionally, it includes support for sub-entities/departments within ledgers and basic payroll functionality.
Other features of the software include the calculation of the payroll tax deductions for employees, the creation of check entries that can be edited as required, and payroll tax (Federal 941) deposit calculator. XIWA also provides detailed stocks (securities) history including buy, sell, spin-offs, mergers, and stock splits. Moreover, users can track securities/stocks on watchlists and create a portfolio of securities with historical prices.
There are some system requirements for XIWA, including DBIWrapper 0.14, HTML Document Object 2.12, and PCX Portal 0.1.03.
In the latest release of the software, half of the code has undergone a complete rewrite, and new interfaces such as Check View and Deposit View have been added. The reporting code has been slightly cleaned up, and the trunk is currently rewriting it entirely. Also, the demo server has been removed, but a demo appliance is available for download.
Overall, XIWA is an efficient accounting package that provides users with multiple features, including double entry accounting, payroll support, and detailed stocks history. Its new user interface and reports customization feature make it easy to use for users of varying skill levels.
