XMMS-Agent is a software that enables XMMS to be hidden in the system tray and controlled through its customizable pop-up menu.
When I tried finding a similar program for XMMS, I couldn't find one that suited my needs. So, I decided to create my own wrapper. If you're a fan of XMMS, I recommend giving xmms-agent a try.
In terms of installation, the process is pretty straightforward. All you have to do is navigate to the directory containing the source code and type "./configure" to configure the package for your system. Then, use "make" to compile the package and "make install" to install the software, data files and documentation. To remove the program binaries and object files, just type "make clean".
The latest release of xmms-agent includes bug fixes and the added feature of XMMS minimizing to the tray. Overall, I'm really impressed with this software and would definitely recommend it to any XMMS user looking for a convenient way to control their media player.
