XPde is a Linux desktop environment that simulates the look and feel of Windows XP.
This new release brings numerous upgrades, including the utilization of PNG+Alpha channel in the desktop. This means that users can use icons of their choice anywhere. Additionally, the icon theme has been updated to the latest crystal svg, with only necessary icons included. The font used is Bitstream vera, which looks quite similar to tahoma.
QTheme from Andreas Hausladen has now been incorporated, while it is an area for work, it promises further improvements. The desktop is now an XPShellListView control based on the XPListView control, from which it can create an explorer. The XPDirectoryMonitor maintains an updated list of files from a directory and receives notifications about file changes without polling or using FAM. As a result, the desktop now repaints at a faster pace after extensive code optimization to enhance performance on resource-limited machines.
The taskbar has also undergone a complete overhaul, it is now built with bitmaps which can be quickly and easily themed, as seen in the snapshot. Additionally, the window manager is mostly new and can be themed, complete with rounded window frames. Overall, XPde offers a great alternative for those transitioning from Windows to Linux.
