Xtra Screen Hacks provides a variety of graphics display modes to be used with a daemon like XScreenSaver. It is a collection of tools that support creative display presentations.
The installation of Xtra Screen Hacks requires the use of a hacked Makefiles and config.h as the script 'configure' is currently non-functional. It is important to note that if your system differs from the author's (i686 Debian GNU/Linux), this build may not work for you unless you modify the variables and defines within the Makefiles and config.h. Assuming the Makefiles and config.h are in working order, executing the command '$ make' generates the binaries that will appear in the 'hacks' directory.
If you have already installed a copy of XScreensaver via the tarball, then use the command '$ make install', which will automatically copy the files to the designated directory. However, if XScreensaver is not installed, you will need to manually copy the file to the target directories. Once done, it is crucial to ensure that the binary and xml files are located in the correct folders to work seamlessly with the xscreensaver-demo module.
The next step is to add entries to your .xscreensaver file by hand. You can open $HOME/.xscreensaver in your preferred text editor and paste the two lines into the programs section as follows:
--snip-----------------
- daisy -root n
- twinkle -root n
--snip-----------------
Running xscreensaver-demo configures and activates the chosen hack seamlessly. If you do not have XScreensaver installed, it is possible still to enjoy the software in an X window. Finally, if you wish to uninstall the software when no longer required, it is sufficient to type '$ make uninstall' in the terminal.
