Xystray is a software that adheres to the freedesktop.org systray specs, offering a simple implementation.
Installation of Xystray is a breeze. You can download, untar, make, and copy xystray to a place of your convenience, for instance, /usr/Xll/bin, ~/bin/, and others. Then make your window manager automatically start it when you begin your session.
Xystray is loaded with impressive command line options that make it an excellent software to work with. There is a -iconmax option that sets the maximum number of icons arranged in a single row or column, depending on the -vertical option. -iconrows is another option that sets the number of rows to keep icons, and the default value is usually 2. In addition, the -iconcols option sets the number of columns to keep icons, and the default value is usually 4.
Xystray also boasts a -iconpadding option that sets the spacing around icons with a default value of 0. The -iconsize option sets the size of each icon; the default value is usually 22 pixels, and it's not recommended to change it. Finally, the -vertical option is useful when used together with -iconmax as it forms the window of Xystray into a single column of icons.
Xystray uses Xt Toolkit, which means it also accepts generic options such as -bg or -geometry. Overall, Xystray is an excellent notification area software that works just right.
