The Z-machine Preservation Project is a Java-based software that implements the Z-machine, providing preservation and compatibility of interactive fiction games.
Some of the notable features of Z machine Preservation Project include support for all story file versions (with V6 deactivated in the 1.5 release), the ability to run as a Java applet within a web browser, the ability to save and read games in Quetzal 1.4 format, the ability to read media in Blorb format, input streams (including keyboard, mouse, and file), output streams for screen, transcript, and memory with nesting, as well as split subwindows with multiple font styles and colors, AIFF sound effects, accented characters, and Unicode.
Additionally, users can benefit from timed input, preinitialized input, game-defined dictionaries, alphabet tables, and accent tables, user-defined default colors, and fonts, as well as command history (deactivated in this preview) and multiple undo functionalities.
To use Z machine Preservation Project, all that's needed is Java Runtime Environment 5 or later installed. The 1.02 Stable Release introduces a French translation, WebStart support, URL load improvement, reworked home page, and minor bugfixes and changes. The 1.5 Preview 1 Development Release brings multiple improvements, such as a new screen model based on standard Swing components, a pause-resume core execution, better NetBeans integration, support for specifying standard and fixed fonts, and postponed V6 support to the 1.6 release.
