Zimple-Gate eliminates undesired ambient noise in just three easy steps.
The noise gate operates by first setting the Threshold level. All of the sounds on a track that have an amplitude level below this threshold will be muted. Imagine the gate as an actual gate, which will close in front of any sound that is below this threshold and open for sounds louder than the threshold.
It is important to note that the Gate does not know the difference between "wanted" and "unwanted" sounds if they have the same amplitude level. Therefore, users must be careful using the gate and set the threshold low enough to eliminate noise but do not lose material that they want.
Unless users are confident about what they are doing, it is encouraged to use the gate during the mixing process and not during recording. It is better to have an intact track that you can process with the gate during a mix than recording a track with holes in it.
Sounds with a transient attack (e.g. snare drum) are likely to require a shorter release setting than sounds that have a smoother attack (e.g. voice). The attack setting also should be set depending on the nature of the sound and the reverberation specific to the recorded soundfield.
The Zimple-Gate comes with a status LED that blinks when the gate is closed. Moreover, the software is compatible with Apple's Garageband, Logic, and other audo programs that support Audio Unit plug-ins with Cocoa GUI. For a list of these programs, users can visit the support page. Overall, the Zimple-Gate is an effective software plug-in for removing unwanted noise and sounds from recorded audio tracks.
