Bitcoop

Bitcoop is an efficient peer-to-peer backup system that allows you to store your files on remote computers with ease. The size of files to be backed up depends on the quantity you choose to share with other peers. The Bitcoop project is especially suitable for server farms that would like to backup data amongst themselves.

To start the server, simply use the bin/run.sh script or the bin/bitcoop init script, which have been tested on Linux and OS X. For Windows users, a port is currently in progress. To build the Bitcoop system, follow these simple steps: choose a boot server amongst the computers you wish to have in your network, set its IP in the XML file, then execute cd Bitcoop, followed by ant, cd native, scons, mv libBitCoop* .., cd .., edit bcoop.xml and finally bin/run.sh. Repeat the process for all machines you wish to include in your network.

Here's how the Bitcoop backup system operates: run the Bitcoop server on each machine that participates in your network, schedule backups to occur at specified times, utilize the command line client bin/shell.sh to connect to computers to trigger backups or access status information. The first backup takes more time than subsequent backups, since all files have to be copied. However, subsequent backups will be much faster than the first one.
