Hegons is a software simulation tool for HEterogeneous Grooming Optical Networks, providing insights into network performance under different scenarios.
Hegons is a powerful and versatile software tool designed for simulating HEterogeneous Grooming Optical Networks. With support for mixed routing and wavelength assignment algorithms, as well as optional wavelength conversion on each node, Hegons allows users to evaluate the performance of different dynamic routing and wavelength assignment algorithms in WDM optical networks.
The software offers a range of measures for evaluating network performance, including call blocking probability, fairness (variance in blocking probability), and call setup time. Hegons is capable of supporting practically unlimited numbers of nodes and wavelengths per link - up to 2 billion - and can simulate more than 18 million calls per minute on a 2Ghz PC.
Hegons currently supports 3 types of nodes (OXCs): non-grooming, single-hop grooming, and multi-hop full grooming, with each node optionally capable of being a wavelength converter node. The software also features four wavelength assignment algorithms - First Fit, Random, Most Used, and Least Used - as well as Fixed Alternate Routing and Shortest Path Routing options.
To help users manage their simulation runs, Hegons offers support for poisson distributed call arrivals, multiple batches, and several methods for calculating blocking probability. It's also possible to limit the average number of call attempts and adjust parameters for maximum and minimum path length and maximum number of paths generated for each source-destination pair.
Network descriptions can be loaded from a file or entered interactively, and simulation results can be saved to CSV files for easy viewing in Excel and chart generation. The latest release of Hegons includes a new feature that allows converter nodes to try the same chosen channel from the previous node before attempting a conversion, with the goal of reducing blocking probability and maintaining the same wavelengths chosen along light paths.
