JackLab Audio Distribution is an exceptional openSUSE-based Linux distribution that is specifically designed for musicians, producers and media creators. We have found that musicians have a unique set of requirements for their Linux environment. For instance, they need a Linux-based distribution that is flexible, powerful, quick to use and easy to learn, all of which are essential in a busy, creative environment.
JAD is based on openSUSE, which is known for its stability and long development history. All major administrative tasks can be done graphically, without even having to learn any complicated terminal commands. Fully compatible with the recently released openSUSE 10.2, JAD comes with a full-fledged production environment for media creation, primarily music.
To streamline audio processing and reduce latency, JAD comes with a Realtime Kernel version 2.6.19. Additionally, the default audio system is based on the Jack Audio Connection Kit (JACK), which is perfect for the needs of musicians and producers, and it provides a professional audio/midi controlling interface.
JAD's installer is based on the well-known YaST2, which serves as an easy-to-use administrative tool. To keep the essential computer resources for music as possible, the distribution has opted for Enlightenment D17 desktop shell as the default window manager. However, KDE desktop environment is also included, where you can enjoy KDE tools like Konqueror, Kmail, Konversation, k3b, and many more.
JAD is ideal for music creation and editing, as it offers around 70 audio applications with sequencers, synthesizers and tools installed and ready to go. Moreover, user-friendly support is provided for setting up and running VST instruments and effects. JAD also includes video production applications and a graphic suite.
For browsing the internet, JAD features Firefox 2.0, specially chosen for its stability, security and extendability. This community-based effort is the result of the work of many contributors. Recently, JackLab and PackMan have combined forces to provide JAD access to the PackMan repositories, where up-to-date audio software, non-audio software and multimedia codecs are available.
We invite you to participate in the development process as well. You can download the latest version as a tester and use the bug tracker to report any problems. As for the graphics contest, the best graphics submitted will be used as default for the bootscreen, wallpaper, skins and icons.
