jMencode

October 5, 2007
jMencode is a Java-based user interface for MPlayer which enables simple video encoding.
Version 0.64
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage jmencode.sourceforge.net
Developed by Damien Farrell
The jMencode software is a Java front-end for MPlayer, a free and useful software made for encoding video. Its primary focus is on converting DVD into MPEG-4. Both MPlayer and Mencoder are available under the GNU General Public License v2. The Mencoder is primarily for use on Linux or related Unix platforms, though there are binaries available for Windows as well.

There are many free frontends available for this kind of functionality. However, the purpose of jMencode is to create one that is as cross-platform and simple as possible. This implies that it excludes the use of software like Avisynth, which, in its current version, is only available for Windows.

While the software is functional and works, it is still quite basic in encoder options. It is worth noting that some users may face difficulties while obtaining nice versions Mplayer/mencoder that provide the x264 encoding. However, the software is still under (intermittent) development, and bug fixes or feature requests will be responded to if possible.

jMencode comes with a variety of key features such as loading DVDs (as folders or discs) or single files as inputs. Mencoder accepts a wide range of file types. Additionally, it allows you to resize or crop frames and select frames to encode with visual previews. The software also encodes to x264 (avc) or mpeg-4 (asp) (xvid) and muxes to mp4 or mkv container format or just use avi. Furthermore, it lets you choose audio compression formats like mp3/aac or keep audio. You can also manually edit video encoding parameters if you'd like.

jMencode is licensed under the GNU General Public License. To install the software, double-click on the file 'JMencode.jar', if you have windows explorer configured properly to open the jar file using java or type the following at the console/terminal window inside this directory: java -jar JMencode.jar. If the path to the java jre is not already set, you will have to type the complete location of the java.exe file. Use java -Xmx256m -jar JMencode.jar to allocate more memory for the runtime.

In the latest release of jMencode, you can now do flv encoding (experimental). The output path works correctly this time, allowing you to save files anywhere. Various validation checks have also been added.
