Kino is a GNU/Linux software for non-linear DV editing.
Kino is a video editing software for GNU/Linux that offers excellent integration with IEEE-1394 for capture, VTR control, and recording back to the camera. This non-linear DV editor has multiple features of capturing video to disk, including Raw DV and AVI format, in both type-1 DV and type-2 DV encodings.
Users can cut and paste portions of video and audio and save it to an edit decision list in SMIL XML format. Moreover, most edit and navigation commands are mapped to equivalent vi key commands, which makes it user-friendly. Kino also supports exporting the composite movie in various formats such as DV over IEEE 1394, Raw DV, DV AVI, still frames, WAV, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4.
In addition, it supports still frame import and export using gdk-pixbuf, which has support for BMG, GIF, JPEG, PNG, PPM, SVG, Targa, TIFF, and XPM. However, certain formats require additional software, such as lame for MP3, oggenc for Ogg Vorbis, and mjpegtools or ffmpeg for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. For MPEG-4, ffmpeg is required.
The current release brings an experimental fx module that provides basic audio and video fx such as importing, filters, and transitions. It also provides basic plug-in functionality to allow third-party extension.
At this point, Kino does not support other video file formats or encodings. Nor does it support multiple layers or tracks of video and audio. However, the developers plan to implement most of these features after focusing on the IEEE-1394, video, audio, and file input and output. Quality, stability, performance, and workflow are the primary focus of this software.
