One crucial feature of public transportation is that passengers never use their private vehicles. Commonly known as buses or subway trains, the public transport system also includes planes and taxicabs, among others. Despite having the option of driving personal vehicles, public transportation has become the preferred mode of travel in cities such as London and Tokyo.

The regulation of public transportation falls under the responsibility of a common carrier. Most of those who use public transportation are commuting to work, shopping centers, or homes. Although driving private cars is the preferred means of travel in developed countries, the rise in fuel prices has prompted more people to explore public transportation systems. This travel method remains significant in developing nations.

The primary advantage of public transportation is cost efficiency since one can save a considerable amount each year by using a bus or subway instead of driving a personal vehicle. However, the significant disadvantage is the limited destination options and reliance on scheduled travel times.

Mass transit refers to transport systems that cater to the general public. Personal vehicles do not fall under this term. Mass transit most commonly involves buses, trains, trams, airplanes, boats, and taxis. The term "taxis" is used loosely in this context.
