To win the game, capture the enemy's general.

The general, is the most important piece in Chinese Chess, moves one step horizontally or vertically within the nine places in the palace area. A special move of the general is that it can "fly" and capture the opponent general, winning the game if the two generals are facing each other without any pieces between them.
The advisor moves diagonally along the diagonal lines in the palace area, while the elephant moves diagonally for two spaces but cannot cross the river in the middle of the board. If a piece is obstructing the elephant's path, it cannot move in that direction.
The horse moves similarly to Chess, two steps in one direction and then 90 degrees to move one step. The chariot is just like the Chess rook, moving horizontally or vertically without limit.
As for the cannon, it moves like the chariot but requires one piece between it and the piece to capture, which is called a "cannon platform." The soldier only moves forward one space before crossing the river, at which point it can move one space forward or left or right but not backward.
This game has been played for over 2000 years and is still popular among the Chinese people.
