Two players from the opposite side form a team, creating two partnerships in total. The game involves scoring at least 10 points by collecting the most tricks in each hand of play. Multiplayer Euchre uses 24 standard playing cards of A, K, Q, J, 10, 9 of each suit.
When a suit is named the trump, every card of that suit outranks any other card of a non-trump suit. The highest ranking card used is the Jack of the selected trump, also known as the right bower, followed by the other Jack of the same color, also known as the left bower. Then, the A-K-Q-10-9 of the trump and the A-K-Q-J-10-9 of the leading suit follow. The leading suit is the suit of the first played card in each trick.
At the start of each round, each player receives five cards. The top card of the remaining deck will be placed face-up on the table and will become the designated trump if any player calls it. The first player on the left of the dealer has the chance to pass or ask the dealer to pick up the face-up card as the trump. Once the dealer picks up the card, the trump is set, and the dealer puts the card in their hand, discarding one card from the hand.
If all players pass, and no trump is set, players will have another chance to call any non-face-up card as the trump. If all players pass in the second round, the game will be forfeited and will have to restart.
After setting the trump, the team that called it becomes the attackers, while the other team becomes the defenders. Players can declare "going alone," which enables them to attempt to win the most points from a hand. If successful, their team can score double points. However, this move comes with the cost of removing the teammate from the game.
