xterm is a terminal emulator widely used on the X Window System to execute command line programs.
The xterm program is the go-to terminal emulator for the X Window System. However, for programs that are unable to use the window system directly, xterm patch provides DEC VT102/VT220 and Tektronix 4014 compatible terminals. One impressive feature of xterm is that it can utilize the underlying operating system's terminal resizing capabilities. For instance, by using the SIGWINCH signal in systems derived from 4.3bsd, it can notify programs running in the window whenever it is resized.
In early 1995, the developer decided to enhance xterm to support ded and add (as well as ncurses) in the X environment. Previously, several individuals had made modifications to support color; however, they did not implement background color erase. To the developer, this was rather perplexing, as preferring MS-DOS to UNIX is incomprehensible. Because they were engrossed in ncurses, they didn't get involved in xterm until the end of 1995 when they worked on atac.
Subsequently, a working version of colorized xterm was created. Around the same time, XFree86 3.1.2B was announced, which included a color xterm that incorporated the "old" color model. The developer joined the XFree86 project to make necessary improvements. After getting more familiar with xterm, they noticed that it only implemented part of VT220.
Thus, they embarked on a project to make xterm an excellent VT220 emulator, realizing that numerous individuals on the internet were searching for a decent one. By the time XFree86 3.2 was released, the developer had implemented most of the control sequences, with a few exceptions such as DECSTR, the KAM and SRM modes, the ones related to doublesize and soft characters, and blink.
