The 3DS Import for Solid Edge is an add-in that allows Solid Edge to import geometric data from .3ds files. This software plug-in is used to facilitate seamless integration of 3D Studio files with Solid Edge.

The software creates trimmed planar surfaces for each triangular face and joins them together to form a body. If the polygon mesh is closed (i.e. it does not contain boundary edges) then the software will create a closed body feature, and when it remains open, this will generate an open surface as well.
Using 3DS Import for Solid Edge is very easy after installation, it automatically loads itself into Solid Edge and adds a new submenu called "3DS Import for Solid Edge" to the Solid Edge Applications menu. The '3DS Import for Solid Edge' menu contains several commands, including Import for importing 3DS file, Help for displaying the 3DS Import for Solid Edge help file, Register for registering your copy of 3DS Import for Solid Edge and About for showing the 3DS Import for Solid Edge About box.
If you want to get started with 3DS Import for Solid Edge immediately, it comes with detailed documentation for each command, including a tutorial to get you started in the shortest possible time. Additionally, it has the 3DS file format which is the native file format of 3D Studio. Although it has been replaced by 3ds Max whose native file has a .max file extension, it is still able to read and write .3ds files. 3ds Max is one of the most widely-used off the shelf 3D animation programs, and it has strong modeling capabilities, a flexible plug-in architecture, and a long heritage on the Microsoft Windows platform. It is generally used by video game developers, TV commercial studios, architectural visualization studios, and also for movie effects and movie pre-visualization.
