A Linux software program designed as an ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) client.
AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client that comes in a small command-line application. It aims to replace the apm tool and targets laptop users who want to stay updated on battery status, thermal status, and the ability to put their laptops to sleep. Desktop systems may not find this tool helpful.
This program functions by accessing the /proc/acpi or /sysfs entries to get/set acpi values. As a result, computers running on a Linux kernel from the 2.4.x or 2.6.x series with acpi enabled can only use it. On a side note, AcpiTool was developed on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6000 running Slackware 10.1 with kernel 2.6.11.
To develop the software, the creators were motivated to refurbish their C/C++ programming skills, which had been dormant for quite some time. Since the application comes as open-source software, distributable under the GNU GPL license, it is free to use.
For installation of the source version, one must begin by unpacking the source tarball: tar zxvf acpitool.x.y.z.tar.gz or tar jxvf acpitool.x.y.z.tar.bz2. `cd' to the directory containing the source code and type `configure' to generate the Makefiles. From there, type `make' to compile the package, `make install' to install the program and any data files and documentation, and `make clean' if you want to remove program binaries and object files from the source code directory.
