khdapsmon

Khdapsmon is an excellent monitor that is primarily designed for the Hard Drive Active Protection System (HDAPS) found in IBM ThinkPads. Its primary interface is a system tray icon, which indicates whether the queue is frozen or not on the selected hard disk device. Similar to the tray icon found on the pre-installed OS on ThinkPads, khdapsmon project should work with other systems similar to the ThinkPad's, such as those found in Apple PowerBooks. However, this is not tested and probably relies upon kernel code that is not yet available.

The status dialog of khdapsmon also prints out useful information like accelerometer status and keyboard/mouse activity status. It also lets users select the monitored device, which is beneficial if you have more than one hard disk that supports queue freezing. However, users must note that this program does not park disk heads based on accelerometer data, and that is the job of the hdapsd daemon. The author is not responsible for lost data or other damage resulting from a misconfigured HDAPS setup.

Therefore, it is crucial to read the documentation for this and more information, including system requirements. It requires Linux 2.6.14 or later, with patches and hdapsd daemon, and a recent version of KDE 3.

Lastly, the GUI is changed, but the screenshot upload appears to be broken. In this release, the GUI has been refactored to better handle larger fonts, and the source distribution has been cleaned up from any cruft.
