AsmTimer software is a timer program designed specifically for Linux users. One of the major challenges that Linux users face is getting accurate timing information without having to patch the kernel or create specialized programs. AsmTimer aims to solve this problem by using averages and repeated executions, making it highly useful for comparing programs.
AsmTimer reads the system time prior to program execution and again after completion, saving this information in an array for every instance that a program is timed. Additionally, the software collects and stores information from the kernel in the same array. When executing a program in a shell (such as bash), AsmTimer accounts for the time it takes to load the shell - this load time can be calculated and subtracted out if necessary (tips available).
Once all of the timing runs have been completed, the software computes averages and sorts the array before displaying the information stored within it. The most recent release of the software fixes a few minor display bugs and adds GPL3 notes, further enhancing its utility for Linux users.
