Baltix is a GNU/Linux distribution derived from Debian and Ubuntu, tailored for people in Lithuania and Latvia.
I recently had the opportunity to review Baltix project and my experience was quite satisfactory. It is a versatile GNU/Linux distribution, based on Debian and Ubuntu, specifically designed for Lithuanian and Latvian people. One of the key features of this software is its compatibility with several languages, including Lithuanian, Latvian, Estonian, Russian, English, Norwegian, and several others around the Baltic region. While the main language for the software is Lithuanian, it supports other languages as well.
Baltix GNU/Linux comes integrated with an installable Live CD. Since 2005, Baltix has used Ubuntu Live CD technology, based on Debian-installer components, with a Gnome desktop environment (some versions have KDE too). The software provides users with a user-friendly installer. At present, Baltix has two installers, one based on the Debian text mode installer and the other based on graphical installer Ubuntu-express.
Baltix has additional packages over and above Ubuntu, which include software for learning, games, vector graphics, CAD, and diagram drawing. Also, it comprises few resource-consuming window managers (currently IceWM), clip art, CAD and office document templates, and many other useful packages for Lithuanian and other Baltic people. It has an interesting collection of educational software for kids and adults, including GCompris, TuxPaint, Celestia (space simulator), etc., and fun games, including Pingus, Frozen-Bubble, TuxKart, PlanetPenguin Racer.
One of the software's most significant advantages is the possibility to run lots of software compiled for Windows OS. Having many spell-check and dictionary applications, it gives you a more personalized experience. Also, Baltix has an automatic installation (autoinstall) feature that makes it possible to install it into a computer in about 10 minutes, which doesn't require any user intervention.
Overall, I found Baltix GNU/Linux to be quite an impressive and well-rounded software. It is easy to use, and the software package contains a comprehensive list of tools that are critically useful for Lithuanian and other Baltic people. It is worth trying out!
