Beep Media Player

BMP is a multimedia player that boasts a skinned user interface based on Winamp 2.x skins. Originally named "beep," the project underwent a name change to "Beep Media Player" to differentiate it from another project with the same name. This extended name has been informally shortened to BMP for daily usage. While some developers no longer recognize it as an acronym, the name BMP is here to stay.

Milosz Derezynski began working on XMMS alone in the fall of 2003, eventually determining a way to compile it against GTK+2. He then released it to the public under the name 'Beep,' generating widespread interest among XMMS users eager to migrate their favorite application to GTK+2.

Build requirements for BMP include Glib >= 2.4, GTK+ >= 2.4, and libglade >= 2.3.1. Optional requirements include ID3v2 tag editing support with id3lib >= 3.8, a Vorbis input plugin with libvorbis >= 1.0, and an ESD output plugin with esound >= 0.2.3, among others.

Note that *BSD users should force linking with the C++ library with LDFLAGS='-lstdc++ -lm' to avoid crashes on exit with certain plugins enabled.

New enhancements in the latest release of BMP include a new desktop icon, a new GConf schema, customizable accelerators, and queue support in Jump to Track. Additionally, the release features a range of new translations and updates, as well as several minor GUI tweaks.

Bugfixes in the latest release include resolved ALSA playback issues, fixed crashes when output plugins return sound volume for only one channel, and fixed centering of playlists in Playlist Editor. The new release also corrects text clipping of non-ASCII titles in Playlist Editor and addresses MimeType and length issues in .m3u files.
