BLT is a command-line tool compatible with Linux, BSD, and OS X that provides users with real-time updates about their Twitter friends' activities while they work. Users can easily stay informed via their command line interface without having to switch to a separate Twitter feed.
BLT is a software that enables you to keep an eye on your Twitter feed whilst working from the command line. It currently supports Linux, FreeBSD, OS X and Cygwin under Windows. To be more specific, BLT is a Perl script that merges Twitter checking into Bash. It is similar to Biff, but dedicated to Twitter. Please note that BLT is still in its pre-alpha stage. Therefore, it's released under the GPLv3 with no Warranty. Here's an example to illustrate its functionality:

For installation, you need to copy it to /usr/local/bin, or a location similar to it. Moreover, ensure that you have the YAML and XML::LibXML libraries installed on your system as they may already exist. The developer is working on an installer which will simplify the process. In case you come across any problems, please inform the developer.
Configuration of BLT is automatic and based on initial questions asked when running it for the first time. However, if you prefer, you may set it up in a YAML file called ~/.bltrc. BLT attempts to add itself into your ~/.bashrc using the code PROMPT_COMMAND=path-to-blt. There's also a rate limiter in BLT which is designed to limit checking Twitter too frequently. Although you may configure this limiter by altering the ~/.bltrc file, please note that it currently checks once every 60 seconds. As a Twitter TOS violation, it's advisable not to check more than an average of 52 seconds.
