One of the main advantages of using MAC addresses is that every ethernet interface has its unique MAC address, which cannot be changed in many cases. Using the agent program for MAC-address-based authentication is a simple yet effective approach.
The software is comprised of two primary features: MAC address informing and MAC address logging. Trackpeerd is the agent program, while the client program is called Trackpeer. The agent program runs on a gateway or packet capturing machine, which resides in the same network segment as the client computers. We refer to this router as the frontline router. The agent listens to communication through the router, caching packets’ header information.
The client program, Trackpeer, is used by administrators or server programs who wish to identify the MAC address of a specific peer immediately after a communication action has been taken by the peer. Trackpeer provides the agent with the source/destination addresses of a packet, the port numbers of the packet, and the time of the packet’s arrival. The agent looks into its internal cache memory, picks up the address information that matches the query, and provides the server with the information.
In effect, the server asks the agent, “Who’s knocked the door at around HH:MM.SS?” and the agent responds accordingly. After a certain period of time (10 mins), the agent will forget the address information, ensuring optimal privacy protection.
