Cluttermm Tutorial

February 17, 2009

I recently tried the Cluttermm Tutorial, and I have some thoughts about it. Firstly, I noticed that Cluttermm Tutorial no longer comes with its own autogen.sh script. But don't worry, to generate the build environment within a fresh checkout, you just need to run "autoreconf --install --force".

Now let's get to the installation instructions. The simplest way to compile this package is to follow these steps:

1. `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type `./configure' to configure the package for your system. However, if you're using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type `sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute `configure' itself. While running the `configure' command, you will see several messages telling which features it is checking for, so be patient.

2. Once you're done with the configuration, type `make' to compile the package.

3. Optionally, you can run self-tests by typing `make check'.

4. Type `make install' to install the programs along with any data files and documentation.

5. Lastly, if you want to remove the program binaries and object files from the source code directory, you can do so by typing `make clean'. Additionally, if you want to remove the files that `configure' created so that you can compile the package for a different kind of computer, type `make distclean'. But keep in mind that there is also a `make maintainer-clean' target, which is mainly intended for the package's developers.

Overall, I found the installation process to be quite straightforward and user-friendly. If you run into any issues, simply refer back to these steps, and you'll have your Cluttermm Tutorial up and running in no time!
