Constat (formerly known as cstat) is a powerful and user-friendly network monitoring application that enables users to keep an eye on network activity on their Linux/Unix systems. This utility provides detailed information on network connections, traffic, and related statistics, and offers an efficient and straightforward way of monitoring and reporting network-related data.

One of the main advantages of Constat is its simplicity and ease-of-use. It is a lightweight, command-line tool that does not require the X Window Server to run, and users can easily customize and configure its output options based on their needs. With Constat, users can monitor and log sent/received traffic information for every live network device, and display the results in units of Kilobytes (KB), Megabytes (MB), and Gigabytes (GB).

Users can take advantage of Constat's real-time monitoring option, which is based on a timer that can be adjusted to suit their preferences. In addition, Constat offers a feature that allows users to view the socket table (Local/remote IPs with ports they are binded to) for a specific protocol or all protocols at once.

Constat is easy to use, and users can quickly get started with it by using a few simple commands. For instance, users can enter "constat [OPTIONS] < interface >" to display information for a specific device, or "constat -t" to show the address/port table for all available protocols.

Constat provides a wide range of options that enable users to customize the application in various ways. For example, users can run Constat in the background, dump output to the log file, monitor device activity, show the list of available protocols, and more.

Some of the latest features added to Constat include a new style of output formatting that displays transmitted packets on a separate line, an option to use old-style formatting, and a new log format. The log file has also been moved to /var/log/ and renamed to constat.log, and the monitoring timer default value has been changed to 30 seconds.

Overall, Constat is a highly recommended network monitoring application that offers a range of powerful features and customization options in a user-friendly, lightweight package. With its simple, straightforward interface and comprehensive reporting capabilities, Constat is a must-have utility for any Linux/Unix user looking to monitor their network connections and activity.
