FreeMIS is a project creating a no-cost and improved version of for-profit MIS software.
FreeMIS is a software project focused on developing a free and superior alternative to commercial Management Information System (MIS) products. All necessary files and data are stored on a web server, enabling access through the internet with modern web browsers, such as Firefox, Internet Explorer 6, and Safari. Users will have a unique username and password that allows them entry to the system. Currently, only teachers can use the system, but FreeMIS is designed to facilitate access and use by any school stakeholder, including students, parents, and governors.
FreeMIS is presently utilized in writing student progress reports that are sent to parents. With the software, teachers can write reports anytime and anywhere they choose using their own devices. It is an incredibly efficient and convenient solution for teachers, with user-friendly features that make the entire process easy, quick, and intuitive. Some additional key features of FreeMIS include password-protected access to ensure data security, web-based connectivity to any computer with internet access, storage of pupil and staff data, storage of course data and class enrollment, tracking and target setting system to monitor student progress, automatic generation of letters to parents/guardians, automated warning emails to school offices if any unexplained absences are noted.
The FreeMIS project aims to be a top-quality alternative to the proprietary MIS that is dominant in UK schools and around the world. The team believes that it is best to create a high-quality MIS program using Open Source methods, where the system and the code used are freely available always. At present, FreeMIS offers only a part of the functionality of other comprehensive MIS alternatives. Development continues, but the software has already been successfully utilized in a Scottish high school. Becta, a British Government Information Technology agency, has recently published a report on financial savings from the adoption of Open Source alternatives, indicating that FreeMIS aims to be part of this cost-saving package for schools.
Lastly, here are some new features included in the software release that enhance usability and functionalities: the user/admin_edit screen has been added to simplify administration; the xhtml has been cleaning up; bug #1497176 has been fixed; code has been refactored to make it more DRY; historic tables from old PHP versions have been removed; admin screen to edit pupil sets has been improved; unit/functional tests have covered more significant details, improving coverage; the CSS for reports has been polished, full reports printing on blank pages, without navigation or distracting elements, and, reports won’t vanish if pupils are removed from pupil sets; all academic-year related details are easy to access on one page, now available for administrative purposes; Heads of Faculties have write-access to all faculty reports.
