Gnome Scan

Gnome Scan is a helpful software that offers offline scan features for the Gnome desktop – just like how print functions. It comes with a C/GObject library which is used to build a standalone application and plugins for various apps such as The Gimp. The application and its plugins are collectively known as flegita.

For the longest time, scanning has been a weak point of desktop computers. Each scanner device typically comes with its own scan software – often only compatible with proprietary operating systems. On free desktops, XSane is considered the best scanner software available, but it's not the most user-friendly option and has poor integration with other apps such as OCR in Abiword.

Gnome Scan aims to fill this gap in the Gnome desktop by creating a system that simplifies scanner usage for both developers and end-users. It provides a solution to overcome the complexity of adding scan features by giving developers an easy-to-use system to facilitate integration. The project originally started as a Google Summer of Code in 2006, led by �tienne Bersac and mentored by Vincent Untz. Since then, the Gnome Scan project has continued its development, resulting in the current stable 0.4 branch.

However, while stable, Gnome Scan has some limitations in its handling of dynamic configurations. Therefore, the team is currently working on redeveloping and redesigning the software to overcome this obstacle. In conclusion, Gnome Scan is an excellent software solution that can make scanning more accessible for Gnome users and developers alike.
