Grism

July 22, 2008
Grism is a free, open-source tool that provides users with an efficient way of monitoring the stock market.
Version 0.9.0
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage www.grism.org
Developed by Nick Rahn
Grism is a versatile and powerful open-source software tool for observing the stock market. It offers the user a wide range of features for tracking the evolution of stock prices through watchlists, portfolios, and charts. The software utilizes Yahoo! Finance for its quote data, making it possible to observe stocks, ETFs, indices, and mutual funds from every major stock market worldwide. All that is needed to track a particular stock is its symbol.

One key feature of Grism is the global view of all watchlists and portfolios with daily and overall totals. Users can refresh all watchlists and portfolios with a single click. The software also saves the state of the GUI (window size, folders tree width, expansion and selection) between runs.

Grism allows for an unlimited number of watchlists with an unlimited number of stocks in each. Each entry has a "watch start" price on which change calculations are based, and users can edit many columns to visualize and explore possible price evolutions. Price and ratio views are available, and individual entries can be marked as important with comments added. Users can copy or move stocks from one watchlist to another and apply a stock split.

Similarly, users can create unlimited portfolios with an unlimited number of stocks in each. Each entry has a buy price and a number of shares that form the basis for gain/loss calculations. Entries can be short or long positions, and users can copy or move stocks from one portfolio to another and apply a stock split. Grism also provides fast daily price charts for dynamic and historical data, and users can export any chart to an image file.

Requirements for Grism include Ruby, GTK2 (2.8 or later), and ruby-gtk2 (0.14.0 or later, including libglade). Installation is straightforward, simply untar the archive, change to the directory where Grism was unpacked, and type `% ruby setup.rb` in the terminal.

The latest version of Grism (as of the time of writing) includes network connection options with proxy support (limited to unauthenticating and basic authentication), historical views of portfolio activity, the ability to modify a stock's symbol, and a Debian/Ubuntu .deb installation file. Overall, Grism is an excellent tool for tracking and analyzing the stock market, with a range of features that are both powerful and easy to use.
