GroupSTAT software provides statistical analysis of a Usenet news spool located locally. It helps users generate data-driven insights for better understanding of Usenet discussions.
GroupSTAT is a software that generates statistics from a local Usenet news spool. This program has been recently used for maintaining unofficial stats for rec.arts.drwho. The previous software used for generating stats, StatNews, was found inadequate for the job. To improve its functionality, either a few changes to its code or starting over completely was required. After assessing the source code of StatNews, starting over was considered to be the easier solution.
To accomplish the task, News::Scan, a Perl module available on CPAN or from the author's website, was used in conjunction with GroupSTAT. News::Scan allowed for creating stats without having to look at the news articles, thereby making the entire process more efficient. This software has been designed and tested under Debian GNU/Linux woody and may work differently on other platforms. Any issues faced while running it on other platforms should be conveyed to the developer.
There are certain requirements for using GroupSTAT: first and foremost, a semi-recent version of Perl is mandatory. Information regarding platform compatibility can be found in the Portability section. All the news articles should be kept in separate text files in a directory on the computer where GroupSTAT is being run. If the computer does not have a news server running on it, then getnews program (included) must be used.
In addition to the basic requirements, GroupSTAT also requires non-standard Perl modules like News::Scan (available from CPAN or the author's web page), Mail::Address (available in the Debian package mailtools or CPAN) and Net::NNTP (only necessary when using getnews and can be obtained from CPAN or Debian package mailtools).
The latest release of GroupSTAT fixed a bug that resulted in the software failing whenever more than one group was selected. This bug had nothing to do with News::Scan.
