GtkPerf is a software for measuring the efficiency of GTK+ libraries. It evaluates the GTK+ performance by running several tests and provides accurate results to improve the performance of user applications.
GtkPerf is a valuable application that has been specifically designed to test the performance of GTK+. The purpose of this software is to provide a common testing platform that can run preset GTK+ widgets, such as opening dropdown menus, toggling buttons, and scrolling text, so as to help determine the speed of the device/platform.
Though we know that benchmarking tools, which include GtkPerf, cannot always give accurate real-world results, it is still possible to utilize GtkPerf to solve many issues like, for instance: determining your hardware/software platform's speed when compared to others; assessing how quickly/slowly GTK+ performs with varied themes; exploring if there are any notably slow widgets when using a particular GTK+ theme(engine); discovering how much GTK+ performance can increase by moving from, say, GTK+ 2.4 to 2.6; clarifying how much GTK+/GDK performance will be augmented when updating X-server, and ascertaining whether GTK+ can be efficiently used in embedded devices.
While there are other performance tools available, none can measure GTK+ user interface speed as effectively as GtkPerf. This release has come with a few exciting new features, such as allowing gtkperf to build on non-gcc compilers, automatic test runs from the commandline, and improvements in the above patch from Brian, which allows users to specify the test count from the commandline. All these great functionalities can be accessed by following the instructions in "gtkperf --help."
