K-Umts

October 23, 2006
Kumts is a utility software that enables the use of 3G UMTS card on your laptop or PCMIA adapter via wvdial connection.
Version 1.2.1
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage divilinux.wordpress.com
Developed by Divilinux
K-Umts utility software is designed to use WvDial for efficiently connecting your 3g UMTS card to your laptop or PCMCIA adapter. The configuration section allows you to set up your password, username, and the number to dial. You can easily create a WvDial.config file in the /tmp directory using the "save config" button. Moreover, the temporary file created will be destroyed once you reboot your system for safety purposes. Use your syslog terminal to monitor your output connection and enjoy the flexibility of your wireless UMTS card.

To run K-Umts, you need to have Kommander and WvDial installed. The program was tested with a Vodafone UMTS Connect Card. Make sure that you have activated the 3G kernel module or recompiled it if needed. As soon as you insert your card, it will automatically bind to /dev/ttyUSB0. In case it does not get connected automatically, check your USB modules. A firmware is not required for this purpose.

The author wrote K-Umts when kppp stopped working for him after an upgrade. WvDial provided a better and more reliable solution for him. To use the software, you need to have a standard Kubuntu kernel 2.6.15.27 installed.

When you plug a 3g card into your system for the first time, all modules will be uploaded, and the USB serial interface will be attached to /dev/ttyUSB0 modem device. WvDial only accepts /dev/modem as a device. You can create this link easily by pressing the "Modem Link" button on the interface. Once the link is created, you can enter your data into the empty text spaces in the left corner.

Before starting the connection, save the .config file in /tmp. If you do not do this, WvDial will fault. If your provider requires an account with NAME and PASS, make sure to enter these details. In the next release, a list of international numbers will be added. However, for now, you must know the number to call when buying the card.

Finally, to connect, activate the syslog logging and start WvDial. It will take only 15-20 seconds to connect. You can watch the connection from the built-in Konsole monitor. If real-time syslog makes the system slow, you can use the "STOP" button to stop it, which will not affect the WvDial connection.

In the latest release, the project has been renamed to K-Umts to improve internet search results. Also, the "modem link" button can detect if the symlink is activated or not.
