The name Kongoni is derived from the Shona word for a Gnu or Wildebeest, the same animal that inspired the name of the GNU operating system. This is a remarkable representation of the spirit and history that Kongoni embodies. The Kongoni operating system is built on the belief of being truly independent and free software. Therefore, it neither contains nor ships any software that is not under a license approved by the free software foundation.
Kongoni is developed with the user in mind, making it easy to install, use, and customize. Kongoni is designed to target 32 and 64 bit Intel compatible chipsets, with native versions of each. The core OS is shipped as a live CD, which is both runnable and installable.
Kongoni is built to function flawlessly with slackware releases, 32-bit architectures, and bluewhite64, 64-bit architectures. The Kongoni team's Port mechanism allows programs to be downloaded as source code and then automatically built into packages without the user's knowledge. This approach has the advantage of reducing bandwidth requirements, which is critical in Africa. Programs that run faster and consume less memory are also an added benefit.
