The Magic Designer software is an identical emulation of the old Hoot Nanny toy. It includes metal-based tools, circular paper, and colored pens for creating mathematically inspired designs. Ideal for art and design enthusiasts looking for an interactive and enjoyable experience.

The original device contained a 6-inch diameter center gear that meshed with two 1-inch planetary gears, each with a circling peg. The pen arms were situated on these gear pegs or fixed stud pegs on either side. The left gear could be moved in a 60-degree arc using the shift lever. By selecting holes in the arms and adjusting the shift lever, brilliant designs could be created on rotating paper discs.
The emulator employs mathematical formulas to calculate the precise point at which the arms meet, given the current settings and incremental turning of the center gear. These points are then connected to form a smooth curve, creating one design. The program allows you to save multiple designs, resulting in stunning final products.
There are two types of design suites one can create using this program. The first is a series of closely packed varied designs, while the second involves drawing a few designs and coloring in the overlapping symmetrical shapes. The results can be saved to PDF files or as a screen capture with an external tool. Additionally, the program supports loading and saving custom text design specification files (MGS) that can be shared with other users of the app or with other emulator implementations.
The program uses The High Fidelity 2D Graphics Rendering Engine for C++, also known as Anti-Grain Geometry (AGG), and FLTK as its GUI toolkit. For PDF output, it employs a reliable program that guarantees excellent results. Overall, this software provides an enjoyable and unique experience for those looking to unleash their creative side.
