MythTV is a DIY PVR software for home entertainment, offering convenient recording and playback capabilities for live TV shows and movies.
MythTV project is a suite of programs that allow you to create your own home media convergence box using Open Source software and operating systems. The project is aimed at building a set-top box that provides a nice interface for watching TV, recording shows, and listening to music, all of which is displayed on a TV and controlled by a remote.
Some key features of MythTV include basic 'live-tv' functionality, the ability to pause, fast forward, and rewind "live" TV. It also supports multiple tuner cards and multiple simultaneous recordings, and a distributed architecture that allows for multiple recording and playback machines on the same network. The software compresses video using rtjpeg or mpeg4, with full support for Hardware MPEG-2 encoder cards.
MythTV also offers support for the hardware MPEG-2 decoder and TV out present on the Hauppauge PVR-350. Additionally, automatic commercial detection/skipping, the ability to grab program information using xmltv, and a fully themeable menu make up some of the software's features.
The television portion allows you to pause, fast-forward, and rewind live Television, install multiple video capture cards, and have multiple servers to record more than one program at a time. You can also have multiple clients, each with a common view of all available programs.
