Net Tamagotchi

The Net Tamagotchi project is a virtual pet software that includes a Net Tamagotchi server. This server is designed to maintain multiple virtual pets on a Unix host, which can be accessed through telnet. To get started, users must first edit the Makefile and ensure that all the settings are satisfactorily configured. Once that's done, they can execute the command "make" to initiate the Tamagotchi server.

It's crucial to note that this server doesn't require superuser privileges, and it's advisable to run it as an unprivileged user. Users can move the executable to the desired directory they would like it to reside in. The server stores all its files in that directory. For users who want to install the executable into a common system daemon directory, they can execute the command "make install".

To launch the Net Tamagotchi, users should type the command "./tamad 90210". The Net Tamagotchi should now be up and running. Users can test it by telnetting it to the port it's running on. They should see the login screen and insert a username to create their Net Tamagotchi. This will be stored and kept in a file named 'tamas' in the current directory. Users should be warned that this file houses plaintext passwords, so users on the system shouldn't be able to read it.

This latest release of Net Tamagotchi features a new versioning scheme popularly used by the Linux kernel. The binary has been renamed from 'tama' to 'tamad' to reflect its status as a daemon. The Makefile is now compliant with GNU standards.
