PimD-DM

If you're in search of a lightweight, stand-alone PIM-Dense Mode implementation that can be deployed or distributed freely, then Pimd-dense might be the way to go. It offers the full PIM-DM specifications, except for a few noted exceptions in the Release Notes. Pimd-dense's code is heavily based on the PIM-Sparse Mode daemon implementation by Puneet Sharma and Charley Liu (USC), Ahmed Helmy (SGI/USC), and Pavlin Ivanov Radoslavov (USC), and for more info on PimD-Sparse, you can check out the PIM Home Page at USC.

Using PimD-Dense for multicast routing needs a separate facility for unicast routing, such as (1) static routes via the UNIX route command, (2) RIP routes via the standard UNIX routed routing daemon, or (3) other dynamic unicast routing protocols such as those provided by the GateD multiprotocol routing daemon. Currently, PimD-Dense is ALPHA-version software that still requires extensive testing. PimD-Dense should be able to compile and run on different UNIX varieties, including FreeBSD, BSDI, NetBSD, SunOS, IRIX, Solaris 2.5, Solaris 2.6, and Linux, although it hasn't been tested on all these. Many current versions of the IP MRouting kernel code might require patches to correct certain bugs before they can work correctly with PimD-Dense. Before using PimD-Dense, you should apply one of the current patches available for PimD-Sparse from USC's PIM FTP site.

In this release, what's new includes a fixed entry timer initialization in route.c:process_cache_miss.
