PyPE is a Python editor that offers both aesthetics and capability in its interface.
PyPE, or Python Programmers Editor, is a software that provides a great editing experience for both new and experienced programmers. This lightweight but powerful editor has an impressive array of built-in tools like syntax coloring, multiple open documents with tabs, per-document browsable source trees, and much more.
Included in the package is the STCStyleEditor.py, used to support styles, which was released under the wxWindows license and is copyright (c) 2001 - 2002 Riaan Booysen. The copy that comes with PyPE was also distributed with wxPython version 2.4.1.2 for Python 2.2 and was not modified in any form. The stc-styles.rc.cfg was slightly modified from the original to avoid causing exceptions during style changes and was also distributed with wxPython version 2.4.1.2 for Python 2.2.
The wxProject.py, included in PyPE, was modified from the original version distributed with wxPython to support being a drag and drop source for files. However, PyPE seems to be incompatible with wxPython that has unicode support.
The software was written primarily from 10:30PM on the 2nd of July through 10:30PM on the 3rd of July. Additional features, bug fixing, and testing were done on the 4th of July to come up with version 1.0. The software is pretty much feature-complete (in terms of standard Python source editing), and there are only a few more features that its developer thinks would be nice to have, and they will be added in due time.
PyPE does not provide much help in using it (mostly because its developer admits to being lazy), but questions that arise regarding its use will be answered and added to the FAQ at the end of the document. Access to the majority of the software's features can be found in the menus, and hotkeys for some functions are listed alongside their respective menu items.
As the developer is still learning other features of wxStyledTxtCtrl, PyPE users can expect the software to be as much of a learning experience for him as it is for them.
PyPE has only been tested on Python 2.3 and wxPython 2.4.2.4, but it should work on later versions of Python and wxPython unless there are radical namespace changes.
