QaMoose

February 7, 2008
QaMoose software provides easy access to an Arabic/English user-defined dictionary through a web interface utilizing the DICT protocol.
Version 2.1
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage www.arabeyes.org
Developed by Nadim Shaikli
QaMoose is a software that allows users to access an Arabic/English dictionary via web access, using the DICT protocol. The software was specifically designed to provide consistent content to assist translators and technical writers involved with Arabeyes.org's Wordlist project.

QaMoose has two modes of operation. In the first mode, users can interface with a DICT server for public queries. The search form provides options for exact and substring searches. The second mode enables users to suggest and approve terms locally. This mode allows users to suggest new terms for approval, search an approved database of terms, and access an admin page to apply for a term inspector/approver position. The admin page also enables users to approve/reject terms and users. Additionally, users can upload/download terms to the local dictionary. The term form includes English, Arabic, and Latin characters.

QaMoose's code is UTF-8 friendly, allowing for Arabic characters to be stored and displayed in the Arabic language, provided that the browser allows it. There is also a virtual keyboard to input UTF-8 Arabic characters.

To run QaMoose, users are required to have MySQL 3.23.26 or later and Perl 5.6.1 or later. Users must download the package to their local machine and modify dict_header.pl by inspecting and modifying the file with their information. The file must also ensure that the $embed's value is 0, unless users would like to embed the code into their site to extend the look and feel of the package.

Users should ensure that mySQL is available on their local machine, or make appropriate modifications in dict_header.pl if a different database is used. Once these requirements are met, users can run `dict_create.pl' and then click on dict_admin.cgi within their browser to log in by entering their Super admin email and password. Users can then change the Super admin's password in the 'Account:Password' section. Once the password is changed, the entry in dict_lib.pl becomes irrelevant. It is worth noting that all passwords are stored in the mySQL database in encrypted form.

After logging out, QaMoose is ready for usage by invoking dict_main.cgi within the user's browser, which serves as the main start point. Users can access DICT abilities by either starting one on their machine or pointing to an available server on the internet. Overall, QaMoose is a useful tool for accessing definitions in the Arabic and English languages.
