QCat

July 19, 2007
Qcat is an uncomplicated media catalog software.
Version 0.5
License GPL
Platform Linux
Supported Languages English
Homepage qcat.sourceforge.net
Developed by kernel_daemon
Qcat is a simple media catalog designed to import data from WhereIsIt. Although the project is still in pre-alpha stage and there are no sources available, Qcat has significant potential to be one of the most user-friendly media catalog software.

If you're interested in using Qcat, here are the steps to compile your own version of the software:

1. First, download the source.
2. Next, untar it using tar -xzvf qcat-0.5-src.tar.gz.
3. CD into qcat-dist-0.5.
4. Here is the tricky part. Because you may be using QT 3.3.x, you need to export QT_DIR and PATH for QT4 to compile. Check where QT4 is installed. For example, if QT4 is in /opt/qt4, you would type these commands: export QT_DIR=/opt/qt4 export PATH=/opt/qt4/bin:$PATH
5. Run qmake.
6. Make.
7. If all is okay, the result shall be an executable file in qcat-dist-0.5/bin named qcat.
8. Run it and enjoy.

To install Qcat, copy the "qcat" file somewhere in your path, as there isn't yet an install script/target.

When you use Qcat for the first time, it will create a file in ~/.config/QCat and store all of your configurations. It will also create your first catalog in your home directory under the name defaultCatalog.qcat.

If you would like to make a shortcut for your CD/DVD drive, navigate to Tools - Manage Drives. There, you can add an alias for your drive or any other folder. If you choose that an optical drive is in use, specify its drive node in /dev/ so the program can read CD/DVD labels and mount/unmount media in the drive.

In Tools - Manage Icons, you can change some of the default icons that come with the software. They are stored in the database.

In the Import menu, you can try to import a WhereIsIt XML file. Keep in mind that if you have groups defined in your WhereIsIt file, the hierarchy will be lost (WhereIsIt does not export it), so you will have to arrange your disks again. You can use Drag and Drop, but at this point, only Disk Groups and Disks can be moved.

There is no need to save your changes in Qcat because they are committed instantly. However, there is no transaction feature available yet, so be aware of that.

To lock the catalog, select catalog properties and click the lock icon. Please note that passwords are kept in plain text, which can pose security risks.

Overall, there are still a few bugs in Qcat, but it's worth checking out. It's almost certain that you'll find something that will fall in love with!
